Connecticut Real Estate Agent / Broker Continuing Education Requirements
Requirements Overview
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection requires 12 hours of continuing education per biennial renewal cycle for all real estate salespersons and brokers. A mandatory 3-hour CT Real Estate License Law course, updated each cycle, covers current legislation, fair housing, and licensing regulations. The remaining 9 hours come from approved electives.
Salespersons and brokers operate on different renewal schedules: salespersons renew on a March-to-March cycle in even years, while brokers renew on a September-to-September cycle. Critically, all CE must be completed at least 90 days before the renewal deadline — not on the deadline itself.
Late completion penalties are nonrefundable: $315 if within two months late, $625 if two to four months late. Beyond that, your license may lapse entirely. New licensees who passed the CT exam during the current cycle are exempt from CE for that period. Retain all certificates for at least four years for potential DCP audit.

Tips for Connecticut Real Estate Agents
- Mark your calendar 90 days before your renewal deadline — that's your actual CE completion cutoff, not the renewal date itself.
- Salesperson and broker renewal dates differ (March vs. September), so double-check which schedule applies to your license type.
- New licensees who passed the CT exam during the current cycle are fully exempt from CE for that period — don't pay for courses you don't need.
- Each course can only count once per cycle, so avoid retaking the same elective even if you found it valuable.
