Iowa Real Estate Agent / Broker Continuing Education Requirements
Requirements Overview
The Iowa Real Estate Commission (IREC) requires 36 hours of continuing education per triennial renewal cycle for both salespersons and brokers. Mandatory topics include 8 hours of Law Update and 4 hours of Ethics, leaving 24 hours for electives. A distinctive Iowa rule caps distance learning at 24 hours per cycle, meaning at least 12 hours must come from live instruction — either classroom or webinar format.
A June 2025 rule change introduced a carry-over provision: up to 18 unused elective hours from the previous cycle can roll forward. However, mandatory Law Update and Ethics hours cannot carry over and must be completed fresh each cycle. Iowa also offers a unique alternative: licensees may pass the appropriate licensing exam between July 1 and December 31 of their renewal year instead of completing CE entirely.
Courses can be repeated for credit only if both the course number and instructor differ. There is no 30-day grace period for completing CE, so plan to finish well before your renewal deadline. The same 36-hour requirement applies equally to salespersons and brokers.
Mandatory Topics

| Ethics | 4 | Every renewal | 4 hours of Ethics required each 3-year renewal cycle. Cannot be carried over from previous cycle. |

Tips for Iowa Real Estate Agents
- Plan your 12 hours of live instruction early — classroom and webinar seats fill up, and Iowa's distance learning cap at 24 hours is strictly enforced.
- Take advantage of the carry-over provision: earn extra electives this cycle and carry up to 18 hours into your next renewal period.
- If you're confident in your knowledge, consider the licensing exam alternative (July 1 – Dec 31 of renewal year) to skip CE entirely.
- A course only counts as a repeat if both the course number and instructor are the same — look for different instructors to retake valuable courses.
