Wisconsin Real Estate Agent / Broker Continuing Education Requirements
Requirements Overview
The Wisconsin Real Estate Examining Board requires 18 hours of continuing education per biennium, split into 12 mandatory hours and 6 elective hours. The mandatory portion consists of six sequential 2-hour courses covering topics like Fair Housing, Antitrust, Contract Law, Case Law, Legislative Updates, and additional Board-selected subjects. These courses must be taken in order (Courses 1 through 6), and their content changes each biennium.
Wisconsin uses a fixed biennial cycle running from December 15 of an even year to December 14 of the next even year. The same 18-hour requirement applies to both salespersons and brokers — since December 2016, brokers are no longer exempt in their first biennium. New salespersons licensed after October 1 of the even year are exempt for that biennium only.
Course providers must reapply each biennium with no course renewals allowed, meaning course availability can shift. The Board may grant extensions for health reasons, active military duty outside Wisconsin, or other compelling circumstances beyond the licensee's control. No carry-over of hours between biennia is permitted.

Tips for Wisconsin Real Estate Agents
- Start early in the biennium — mandatory courses must be taken in sequential order (1 through 6), so you can't skip ahead or take them out of order.
- Mandatory course content changes every biennium, so last cycle's courses won't satisfy the current requirement.
- If you're a new salesperson licensed after October 1 of the even year, you're exempt from CE for that biennium — but verify your exact license date.
- Course providers must reapply each biennium, so your preferred provider from last cycle may not offer courses this time. Check availability early.
