Oklahoma PE CE (PDH) Requirements (2026): 30 Hours Every 2 Years
Requirements Overview
The Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors requires 30 PDH within each 24-month renewal period. No topic is mandated for engineers — activities must simply meet the Board's rules under 245:15-11. The Board has final authority over course acceptability and PDH value.
Under the standard method, up to 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next biennium. Licensees may instead elect an equivalent calendar-year method of 15 PDH per year totaling 30 per period, but that option allows no carryover. One PDH equals at least 50 minutes of instruction.
The Board maintains no pre-approved provider list; licensees ensure activities qualify and retain proof for audit. New licensees are exempt for their first pro-rated and first two-year periods, with additional exemptions for active-duty military, disability or hardship, and retired status.
Renewal Pathways
Exemptions
- New Licensee — New licensees by way of examination or comity are exempt for their first pro-rated renewal period and first two-year renewal period. PDH's earned during this exempt period may not be carried forward to the first non-exempt renewal period.
- Military Active Duty — A licensee deployed on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces is exempt from PDH's during that year when military-duty circumstances prevent obtaining training and a waiver request has been submitted; also when performing engineering/land surveying services as military duties (per DD 214). Temporary active duty exceeding 120 consecutive days in a year is exempt for that renewal period.
- Disability Illness Hardship — A licensee experiencing physical disability, illness, or other extenuating circumstances may be exempt as reviewed and approved by the Board; supporting documentation must be furnished.
- Retired Status — A licensee who elects Retired status at renewal is exempt. To return to active practice, 30 PDH's must be earned before returning.
How You Can Complete Your CE
Oklahoma CE Rules & Limits
Details specific to Oklahoma that generic CE guides tend to miss:
- Carry-over — Under the standard method, a maximum of 15 PDH's may be carried forward into the subsequent biennial renewal period. The calendar year reporting method allows no carryover.
- PDH is defined as a professional development hour of at least 50 minutes of instruction (contact hour, nominal) — 245:15-11-1.
- Credit for qualifying seminars and workshops is one PDH for each hour of attendance (245:15-11-6(b)(2)).
- A separate 2-PDH requirement on the Oklahoma Minimum Standards for the Practice of Land Surveying applies ONLY to Professional Land Surveyors and dual licensees, NOT to Professional Engineers (245:15-11-5(c)).
- The Board does not pre-approve courses; licensees are responsible for ensuring activities meet the rules, and must retain proof of completion for audit. Licensees certify compliance at renewal (245:15-11-5(d)).
- PDH's may be earned via college courses, continuing education/webinars/distance education, seminars/workshops, teaching, active participation in professional societies and standards/code committees, developing licensure exams, authoring papers/books, and patent awards (245:15-11-5(e)).
- If a Retired-status licensee returns to active practice, 30 PDH's must be earned before returning (245:15-11-3(b)(4)).
Provider Requirements
No pre-approved provider/sponsor list is maintained; the Board has final authority with respect to acceptability of courses, credit, and PDH value. Licensees may track/report activities via a free MyNCEES account.
Tips for Oklahoma PEs
- Earn 30 PDH per biennial period; no subject is mandatory for engineers, so pick practice-relevant activities.
- Under the standard method you can carry up to 15 PDH into the next period; the optional calendar-year method (15/year) allows no carryover.
- Confirm each activity gives at least 50 minutes of instruction per PDH, since the Board sets that as the contact-hour baseline.
- Track and report activities through a free MyNCEES account and keep proof of completion for audit.
- The 2-PDH land-surveying standards requirement does not apply to PEs — only to Professional Land Surveyors and dual licensees.
