Kansas Land Surveyor CE (PDH) Requirements (2026): 30 Hours Every 2 Years
Requirements Overview
The Kansas State Board of Technical Professions (KSBTP) regulates professional land surveyors and sets continuing education under the Kansas Administrative Regulations, Article 14. Every surveyor must complete 30 CEUs (one CEU equals one contact hour) during the two-year period immediately before the biennial renewal date. There is no per-year minimum — the 30 CEUs are measured across the full cycle.
Within that total, at least 24 of the 30 CEUs must address health, safety, property, and welfare (HSPW), and surveyors have an added subject rule: at least 2 CEUs must be preapproved activity on the Kansas minimum standards for boundary surveys (K.A.R. 66-12-1(b)). Excess hours help next time — up to 15 HSPW CEUs carry forward into the following renewal period. Self-study is capped at 5 CEUs per period.
Mandatory Topics
| Topic | Hours | Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health, safety, property, and welfare (HSPW) | 24 | Every renewal | At least 24 of the required 30 CEUs each two-year renewal period must be related to health, safety, property, and welfare (HSPW). No more than 10 HSPW CEUs may be obtained in any 24-hour period (KSBTP guidance). |
| Kansas minimum standards (boundary surveys) | 2 | Every renewal | Each professional surveyor must complete at least two CEUs of preapproved continuing education activity on the Kansas minimum standards adopted by reference in K.A.R. 66-12-1(b). These CEUs must be preapproved by the board. |
Exemptions
- First Renewal — A licensee renewing a license for the first time is exempt from the continuing education requirements for that renewal.
- Active Military Duty — A licensee called to active duty in the U.S. Armed forces for a period exceeding 120 consecutive days in a renewal period is exempt from 15 of the required 30 CEUs for that renewal period.
- Inactive Or Emeritus Status — A licensee who places the license on inactive or emeritus status under K.A.R. 66-6-10 is not required to complete CEUs while inactive; upon returning to active practice the licensee must earn 30 CEUs for the last renewal period or meet the alternative requirements of K.A.R. 66-14-1(b).
How You Can Complete Your CE
Kansas CE Rules & Limits
Details specific to Kansas that generic CE guides tend to miss:
- Carry-over — A licensee who exceeds the requirement in a renewal period may carry a maximum of 15 CEUs forward into the subsequent renewal period, but only health, safety, property, and welfare (HSPW) CEUs qualify for carry-forward.
- The requirement is 30 CEUs (contact hours) across the two-year period preceding each biennial renewal; at least 24 of the 30 must be in health, safety, property, and welfare (HSPW) subjects (K.A.R. 66-14-1).
- Surveyor-specific: at least 2 of the CEUs must be preapproved activity on the Kansas minimum standards for boundary surveys adopted by reference in K.A.R. 66-12-1(b). These must be preapproved by the board.
- A maximum of 5 self-study CEUs may be applied in any one renewal period (K.A.R. 66-14-5); a maximum of 10 HSPW CEUs may be earned in any single 24-hour period (KSBTP guidance).
- Up to 15 HSPW CEUs may be carried forward into the next renewal period, but only HSPW CEUs qualify for carry-forward (K.A.R. 66-14-1).
- Licensees who renew in more than one profession (for example, both professional engineer and professional surveyor) must complete 20 CEUs for each profession every two years, with at least 16 of the 20 for each profession being HSPW CEUs (K.A.R. 66-14-1).
- CEUs are self-certified at renewal; supporting records must be maintained for at least four years for possible audit (KSBTP guidance).
Tips for Kansas PLSs
- Reserve 2 of your CEUs for a board-preapproved course on the Kansas minimum standards for boundary surveys — this surveyor-specific requirement is separate from the general HSPW hours and the course must be preapproved by KSBTP.
- Aim for at least 24 HSPW CEUs of your 30; only 6 can be non-HSPW. Note that no more than 10 HSPW CEUs count from any single 24-hour period, so you cannot cram all your HSPW hours into one long event.
- Cap your self-study at 5 CEUs per renewal period. Beyond that, hours must come from live course-work, seminars, teaching, presentations, or other qualifying activities.
- If you earn more than 30 in a period, up to 15 HSPW CEUs can roll into your next renewal — but only HSPW hours carry forward, so bank the right type.
- Keep your CEU records for at least four years. Renewal is by self-certification, so KSBTP can audit you and ask for proof of every claimed hour.
