West Virginia Land Surveyor CE (PDH) Requirements (2026): 8 Hours Every Year
Requirements Overview
West Virginia licenses land surveyors through a dedicated Board of Professional Surveyors — separate from the engineering board — and its rules run on an annual renewal cycle. Every licensee must acquire 8 PDH units for each renewal year as a prerequisite to renewing (W. Va. C.S.R. §23-2-3).
Two subjects are mandatory on a longer clock. Within every four-year span, you must complete at least 2 PDH in minimum technical standards and at least 2 PDH in professional ethics for land surveyors. These four hours count toward your annual totals but must appear within each four-year window.
Excess effort is not wasted: if you exceed the annual requirement, up to 8 PDH units may be carried forward into the next renewal period. A range of exemptions exists — new licensees by examination (first renewal period), active military duty, documented hardship, long foreign assignment, and retired status — and nonresident licensees may instead certify compliance with their home state's requirements.
Mandatory Topics
| Topic | Hours | Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum technical standards | 2 | Periodic | A minimum of 2 PDH units on minimum technical standards must be completed within every four-year span. |
| Professional ethics for land surveyors | 2 | Periodic | A minimum of 2 PDH units on professional ethics for land surveyors must be completed within every four-year span. |
Exemptions
- New Licensees (By Examination) — New licensees by way of examination are exempt from the continuing professional competency requirements for their first renewal period.
- Active Military Duty — Licensees on active duty in the U.S. Armed forces for more than 120 consecutive days during the renewal year are exempt from the continuing professional competency requirement for that year.
- Disability, Illness, Or Hardship — Licensees experiencing physical disability, illness, or other extenuating circumstances may request an exemption with supporting documentation, subject to Board approval.
- Foreign Assignment — Licensees assigned outside the United States for more than 120 consecutive days during the renewal year while employed as a professional are exempt from the continuing professional competency requirement for that year.
- Retired Status — Licensees who list ‘Retired’ on the renewal form and certify they receive no remuneration from surveying services are exempt from the continuing professional competency requirement. A returning practitioner must make up the required hours for up to two prior years.
- Nonresident Reciprocity — A nonresident licensee may certify compliance with the continuing professional competency requirements of another state or jurisdiction in which they are licensed, in lieu of West Virginia's.
How You Can Complete Your CE
West Virginia CE Rules & Limits
Details specific to West Virginia that generic CE guides tend to miss:
- Annual minimum — at least 8 hours must be completed each year of the cycle, not just by the renewal deadline.
- Carry-over — If a licensee exceeds the annual requirement, a maximum of 8 PDH units may be carried forward into the subsequent renewal period (W. Va. C.S.R. §23-2-3).
- West Virginia professional surveyor licenses renew annually; every licensee must earn 8 PDH units each renewal year (W. Va. C.S.R. §23-2-3).
- Within every four-year span, at least 2 PDH must be earned in minimum technical standards and at least 2 PDH in professional ethics for land surveyors.
- Up to 8 excess PDH units may be carried forward into the next renewal period.
- Land surveyors are regulated by a separate Board of Professional Surveyors, not the engineering board; the requirement differs from West Virginia's professional-engineer rule.
- Nonresident licensees may certify compliance with their home jurisdiction's continuing-competency requirements in lieu of West Virginia's (§23-2-5).
Tips for West Virginia PLSs
- Plan around an annual deadline: 8 PDH every renewal year, not a lump sum every two years. Missing a year blocks renewal.
- Track the four-year clock for the mandatory subjects — at least 2 PDH in minimum technical standards and 2 PDH in professional ethics for land surveyors must fall within each four-year span.
- If you overshoot in a strong year, up to 8 PDH can carry forward, giving you a cushion for the next renewal.
- If you are licensed in another state, you may certify compliance with that jurisdiction's continuing-competency requirements instead of West Virginia's — confirm the process with the Board.
- Note the separate surveyor board: do not rely on the West Virginia engineering board's rules. Keep records supporting every PDH claimed and verify current mandatory-course formats with the Board of Professional Surveyors.
