Maryland Nursing CE Requirements (2026): 30 Hours Every 2 Years
Requirements Overview
Maryland uses a continuing competency system rather than a flat CE mandate. Registered nurses must satisfy one of three pathways at each biennial renewal: document 1,000 hours of active nursing practice within the preceding 5 years, complete 30 CE contact hours within the 2 years before renewal, or complete relevant college coursework (1 semester hour equals 15 contact hours, grade C or higher required).
The practice hours pathway is by far the most common. Any nurse working a typical part-time or full-time schedule will easily accumulate 1,000 hours over 5 years, meaning most Maryland RNs never need to take formal CE courses for licensure purposes.
All RNs must also complete a one-time Implicit Bias and Racism Training (effective October 1, 2025, replacing the earlier Implicit Bias Training from April 2022). CE courses must be ANCC-accredited. Maryland is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state, so each Maryland license is state-specific.
