Maine Nursing CE Requirements (2026): No Mandatory CE Hours
Requirements Overview
Maine is one of the few states in the country that does not require any continuing education for registered nurse license renewal. The biennial renewal process is straightforward: complete the online renewal application and pay the fee. No CE hours, no mandatory topics, no practice hour verification.
This applies specifically to RNs. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) in Maine have separate and more demanding requirements: 50 contact hours every two years, with at least 30 in Category I and no more than 20 in Category II. APRNs with prescriptive authority also need pharmacology hours.
All renewal applications must be completed online as of January 1, 2020. While the state imposes no CE mandate, individual employers may still require ongoing education as a condition of employment.

Tips for Maine RNs
- Even though Maine has no state CE requirement, most employers — especially hospitals and large health systems — mandate their own annual training. Check your facility's policy.
- If you hold licenses in multiple states, remember that other states' CE requirements still apply to those licenses regardless of Maine's exemption.
- If you're an APRN in Maine, don't confuse the RN exemption with your own requirements. APRNs need 50 contact hours every two years.
- Consider pursuing voluntary CE to stay current in your practice area and maintain competitiveness in the job market, even though it's not legally required.
